Biodiversity and ecosystem services in the Gothenburg region

An agreement in which actors from business, municipal administrations and companies have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly take action to benefit biodiversity and promote ecosystem services.

The Handshake for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services brings together actors from business, municipalities and academia in the Gothenburg region to share good examples and be inspired by each other. In the first stage, four companies, four administrations and six municipal companies within the city of Gothenburg signed the handshake's memorandum of understanding.

The participants that have signed the memorandum of understanding commit to implement a series of measures to benefit biodiversity.

The academia participates in the collaboration by coordinating The Handshake and contributing with a scientific council that reviews the work. Coordination is done through the SamBio project, which is run by GGBC - Gothenburg Center for Global Biodiversity Studies, where the University of Gothenburg is the host organization. Business Region Gothenburg (BRG) is also involved and supports the collaboration by sharing its experiences from similar handshakes in other areas.

The common denominator for the signatories of The Handshake is that they have a major impact on biodiversity and have great opportunities to act forcefully in their respective areas. Those who sign The Handshake also want to create the conditions and inspire more organizations to prioritize and implement measures for biodiversity and ecosystem services. The Handshake now welcomes more actors to join the collaboration and sign the memorandum of understanding.
